In her films and photographs, Clarisse Hahn pursues a form of documentary research on the social role of the body. Pierre (whose title means “stone”, and is also the French equivalent of the name “Peter”) sees her abandon her customary media. On a slim slab of granite set against the wall is engraved the portrait of a man – perhaps himself called Pierre – sat at a table with jewellery laid out on it. For this work, based on a found photograph, Hahn turned to monumental masons who made use of a traditional Armenian sculpture technique. The gaze and frontality of the figure draw the viewer into this clandestine scene immobilised in time.
