The Material

Combining tradition and modernity, Zhang Enli here paints a still life of an everyday object in a manner suggestive of the ink washes of traditional Chinese painting. Seeking to capture the essence of things neglected by “high art”, he paints from sketches, photographs or memory, producing what might be seen as a catalogue documenting contemporary life. In The Material the simple depiction of cable hanging from hooks becomes a complex portrait.
