The work of American artist Sherrie Levine is an example of appropriation art, notably in her photographic reproductions of works by great artists, all of them male. She questions the ideas of authorship, originality and authenticity, together with the under-representation of women in art history. After Walker Evans was her first work in this vein: Levine re-photographed images by the celebrated photographer Walker Evans that she found reproduced in a catalogue. The “after” of the title refers both to this artistic indebtedness and to the postmodern anxiety of having arrived too late, “after” the great artistic revolutions.
