Table à thé Kyoto
1983
This tea table embodies Kuramata's poetic spirit as well as his research into materials.
The Japanese designer blended pieces of coloured glass with terrazzo, a material made up tram synthetic resin and powdered stone, which is underscored here by its surface spotted with bright colours. He used this formula, patented under the name Star Piece, to cover floors, walls, displays and furniture. By working in the anti-establishment aesthetic spirit of Memphis, which resisted the hierarchisation of materials and their uses, Shiro Kuramata integrated terrazzo into the decoration of the object itself.
