J.A. Boiffard's images in the photographs for Nadja are "by virtue of a
certain dissonance a trap where our subconscious stumbles." (louis Chéronnet, art critic)
Having signed the preface to the first issue of La Révolution surréaliste [The Surrealist Revolution] with Paul Éluard and Roger Vitrac, Jacques-André Boiffard turned shortly afterward to photography and became Man Ray's assistant. ln 1928 André Breton invited him to make the photographic illustrations for Nadja.Economical in their effect and deliberately commonplace, these photographs
of the Parisian places evoked by the poet testify to a documentary approach to the city, without ever exhausting its opacity or its mystery.
