Woman's House
1972
The Japanese artist Mako Idemitsu makes films dealing with the female body, motherhood, and the discrimination suffered by women artists. She shot Woman’s House, her first 16 mm film, as the Women’s Liberation Movement spread throughout America. It takes place in the dilapidated Los Angeles mansion turned into the Womanhouse by a group of feminist artists from CalArts. In the kitchen a set of sculpted breasts gradually transforms into fried eggs; elsewhere a bath fills up with tampons, while from a linen cupboard springs a trapped mannequin.
