As a shrewd connaisseur of the history of art, Zobernig lays claim to a multiple heritage, ranging from Constructivism to Minimalism and Conceptual Art.
The artist adopts certain essential forms from these movements and reinterprets them in works that are often ambiguous and sometimes humorous. Here he takes as his point of departure the neoplasticism of Piet Mondrian who, in the mid-1920s, inclined his square pictures to make diamond-shaped compositions. Heimo Zobernig reuses this process and extends it with the material used, thousands of crystals that he glues to the canvas in a reflection on the seductive aspect of a certain contemporary art.
