An architect and engineer in Le Corbusier’s firm, Georges Candilis took over as head of the African branch of Atbat (ATeliers de BATisseurs) between 1951 and 1955. In partnership with Shadrach Woods, he studied the introduction of basic housing structures. Michel Écochard invited them to collaborate on a collective housing zone in the shanty town sector of Casablanca and they built 150 group housing units at the “Carrières centrales”, where “Europeans, Muslims and Israelites” lived side by side.
