Fresh Widow
1920 / 1964
With Fresh Widow, Duchamp persists in "doing something that is not a picture".
Duchamp was very fond of puns, the title of this work being a case in point. Changing from French Window to Fresh Widow, this window becomes a "cheeky widow", a reference to the black leather of its window panes. This window, which Duchamp had constructed in miniature and was signed by Rrose Sélavy, his female alter ego, is in fact a blank window that does not look onto any landscape, nor fictitious space. But over and above the pun, the concept of the painting as a "window on the world" in the Western pictorial tradition is called into question.
