After moving to France in 1956 the American-born muralist Fabio Rieti began a close collaboration with architect Émile Aillaud, designing large-scale polychrome schemes for such major developments as the social housing schemes at Grigny (La Grande Borne 1967-1971), Chanteloup-les-Vignes (1971-1973) and Nanterre (Quartier Picasso, 1974-1978). Entirely covered in coloured glass paste, the facades of the Quartier Picasso depict a sky with clouds, crossed by greenery. Beyond this apparent figurative literalism, the colour scheme contributes to establishing an identity for the new neighbourhood. The drawings of Fabio Rieti and Émile Aillaud are testimony to an encounter between modern architecture and a poetical vision of the city.
