Le ciel meurtrier
[1927]
Constantly seeking "poetic" and "moving" images, Magritte began to develop the motif of the dead bird in 1926, associating violence with a conventional image of fragility and innocence.
Preceded by a painting, Le Plaisir [The Pleasure] (1927, Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf) showing a little girl devouring a bird and inspired by the artist's wife, devouring a chocolate animal, Le Ciel meurtrier [The Deadly Sky] multiplies the motif of the blood-stained fowl on a threatening landscape. Contrasting with the atrocity of the subject, the regular and symmetrical repetition of the birds evokes the decorative wallpapers that René Magritte made at the beginning of his career.
