Les Deux Péniches
[1906]
Large dabs of paint create an explosion of pure colour, which Derain compared to "sticks of dynamite".
While in London in 1905-1906 to paint a series of landscapes commissioned by his gallery owner Ambroise Vollard, André Derain painted these barges from a bridge over the Thames. The off-centre subject is framed "photographically", giving this composition a feeling of instantaneousness and movement. A vigorous touch applied directly to the unprepared canvas captures the activity of the boatmen in full swing.
