Combining photography, text and graphics in different arrangements, Taryn Simon’s projects represent a reflection on the archive and memory. The series “A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters” is the outcome of four years of research during which the artist travelled the world researching different lineages and their stories. Chapter XVIII features two dancers imprisoned under the Vagrancy Act in Franco’s Spain and an Iranian exile. Simultaneously rigorous and arbitrary, the artist’s collecting reflects the relationships between chance, lineage, and other determinants of fate.
