Les Quatre Z'éléments : Air, Eau, Feu, Pierre
1997 - 1998
"The painting is the death of reality." (Philippe Mayaux)The hybrid motifs that emerge from Philippe Mayaux' paintings, objects and installations are the outcome of his readings and mental meanderings. His works sway between reality and artificiality and seem to have come straight out of a hallucination or a nightmare. ln this series of small pictures, the artist has painted four characters which represent the four elements. But the dignity of this allegorical iconographic motif is undermined by a touch of kitsch, comic-like aesthetics and a title which plays with grammaticality. With a lot of irony, Mayaux demystifies these fundamental elements of nature.
