Aganaks
1950
The Aganaks are bad and have a fierce eye, but always with a note of humour, as in this drawing from Jorn's Cobra period.
Seeking a form of expression that was both transgressive and authentic, Danish artist Asger Jorn was one of the leading figures in the Cobra group which he founded in 1948, notably with Karel Appel. As he suffered from tuberculosis , bizarre beasties called "Aganaks" appeared in his work. Half-man, half-animal, they evoke both crocodiles and scorpions or Koch's bacilli. Like the "clichés" of an original language, these creatures with a strong emotional charge are easily identifiable by most people.
