Emma Dance
1977 - 1978
A swirling rhythm energizes Anthony Caro’s Emma Dance (B 1176). The sculpture is one of the “Emma” series begun while he was artist in residence at the Emma Lake summer workshop in Canada in 1977. Abandoning the imposing manner of his earlier works, Anthony Caro here ventures on a new style, with light, linear forms deployed in space, open structures engaged in a dialectic of inside and outside. There are indeed recollections of Picasso’s late-1920s sculptural drawings and his planned monument to Apollinaire, but Caro’s stylistic choices are also related to the isolation of the place, which led him to the use of steel tube, angle irons and other light and easily manageable elements.
