ln the vein of social realism, Model formulated a violent critique of the Côte d'Azur bourgeoisie.
A left-wing activist, Lisette Model aimed to highlight the inequalities between social classes in the early 1930s. ln Nice, the American photographer looked upon the opulence of the bourgeoisie with indignation. The following year, she published her photographs with a text in the magazine Regards under the pseudonym Lise Curel. Not without a certain virulence, she wrote: ''The Promenade des Anglais is a zoological park where the most hideous specimens of humankind come to wallow in white armchairs."
