Croatian-born Janko Domsic arrived in France in the 1930s and lived in destitution. All he was interested in was his art, which he devoted himself to in the anonymity of Parisian cafés, producing an enigmatic oeuvre with magnetic appeal. His drawings all show fixed figures wearing crowns in the foreground, like timeless icons with which he identifies. Rays in the form of wings are adorned with stars and Orthodox crosses and hint at the figure's flight into the universe scattered with coded writings and religious and political symbols. Here, the creative impulse is at work as a transcendental process.
