"ln several cases, he seems to depict the vertiginous and random dance from which life emerged." (Luc Debraine, curator)
Eugène Gabritschevsky was barn into a wealthy Russian family. His brilliant career as a biologist was cut short when his mental health deteriorated and he was permanently admitted to hospital in 1931. From then on, he produced thousands of visionary works. He used paintbrushes, rags, sponges and his fingers to create random, suggestive forms: embryonic beings and ghostly silhouettes. From this landscape of sumptuous dreamlike splendour, a universe in its birthing pangs emerges, of which the constantly changing, unfinished forms bear the imprint of his work as a geneticist.
