Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe
1964
This version by Alain Jacquet of Manet’s celebrated Déjeuner sur l’herbe (1863) was the first of the artist’s works of Mec’ Art ("mechanical art"). The issues at stake in this screenprinting on canvas were explored in a 1965 manifesto by Pierre Restany. In the image, Jacquet has included contemporaries: Pierre Restany on the right; his wife, the gallerist Jeannine de Goldschmidt, to the left; painter Mario Schifano in the middle; with Jeannine’s sister, Jacqueline Lafon, behind. Faithful to the mechanical spirit of the technique behind this image, Jacquet produced almost a hundred of them, though all with slight variations.
