This painting forms a flow of matter and heralds Merz's future installations made with poor materials.
After discovering works by the Cobra movement, Mario Merz produced several paintings of circles and spirals in primary colours, most of which have been destroyed. This one was painted during his stay in Switzerland where he defined his poetic style in close contact with nature. He quickly abandoned the two-dimensional plane to make monumental works combining organic or industrial materials and became a key figure of Arte Povera.
