Weihnachtsengel mit Bethlehemszene, 2. Fassung
(Ange de Noël avec scène de Bethléem, 2ème version)
[vers 1911 - 1912]
"I am filled with gratitude that in this life I have experienced the meaning of art, purely and truly." (Maria Marc, letter to Gabrielle Münter, 1916)
Maria Franck trained as a painter in Berlin and in Munich where she met her future husband, the painter Franz Marc who founded the Blaue Reiter group with Kandinsky in 1911. She took part in the second exhibition of the group in 1912. This painting is remarkable for its size, chromatic onirism and its dynamism which recalls the futurism discovered by the artist in Cologne. The extraordinary proportions of the angels -figurines or children's toys- surrounding the Three Wise Men reflected in a Christmas bauble, blur the spatial scale and endow the composition with great power.
