Ribbed Red is part of a series of two-sided paintings placed in a space, which Nelson began in 2002.
ln the early 1990s, Dora Nelson began to focus on unorthodox materials (cheesecloth, muslin, gel and modelling clay) to produce her abstract paintings. Continuing on from abstract expressionism, they combine control and accident and give an impression of a very free "hypermaterialism". For this work the artist placed the canvas horizontally, glued cords that acted as a barrier to the paint, then stained the canvas with water-based acrylic. She then removed the canvas from its frame and restretched it back to front.
