Wilson's works drew on a vision revealing a land elsewhere close to the unconscious. lt drew attention first from the English Surrealists and then André Breton, who exhibited his work in Paris in 1947.
Wilson was illiterate and joined the army at the age of 16, discovering lndia and South Africa before emigrating to Canada. He only returned to London after the Second World War. His works are populated with fairy-tale-like plants and animals, like this landscape composed of forms reminiscent of decorative motifs and enigmatic totemic figures. Wilson's works reveal the enchanted and enchanting facets of a vaster and more mysterious world and, in the words of Dubuffet are, "most intriguing and fascinating".
