How to paint while positioning oneself outside the scope of painting and its history, the better to renew it?
This question runs through all of Jacqueline Humphries' work. Beginning with her earliest "conceptual" canvases in the 1990s, she oriented her work toward abstraction. The artist now borrows the signs from our computer keyboards and emoticons, which she uses as a matrix for large-format pictures transcribed into ASCII (American Standard Code for Information lnterchange) language. Contaminated by digital tools, her painting testifies to a major change in the production and consumption of images.
