By working physically on images, Pavlov subverted the images documenting Soviet lite.
Yvgen Pavlov, a co-founder of the Vremya Group, an offshoot of the Kharkiv School, stands out for the experimental dimension of his photographic practice. Collage, superimposition and scratching make up a phantasmagorical imaginary world at odds with the documentary approach. ln the Total Photography series the colouring by hand, which seems almost accidental, focuses our attention on the materiality of the print. Similarly, in Archives, the discreet touches of colour that Pavlov adds to the prints highlight the defects of the image and undermine our reading of the work.
