L'Accusé
[1908]
ln around 1906, Rouault gained access to the courthouse to observe the figures in the courtroom.
For this major painting, which recently entered the national collections through donation, Georges Rouault reduces the threatening crowd around the accused to a few reddened heads. ln the midst of this circle of puffy faces furrowed with wrinkles, he seems to be the only one who has retained any dignity. The whiteness of his collar is the only source of light in this dark, grave composition, as through to plead the innocence of the accused. Here, like the caricatures of the engraver Honoré Daumier, Rouault juxtaposes the grotesque and the tragic which, for him, are strongly connected in life.
