Balzac
[1958]
From 1952, Longuet moved away from figurative art and began an intense period of collaboration with architects that lasted three decades.
The first sketch of this monumental plaster piece, part of a commission for the Lycée Honoré de Balzac in Paris, shows a figure detached from the architecture, which he seems intent on climbing. This motif gradually becomes integrated into the succession of planes and blends with the architecture itself. Longuet pursued his quest for a “sculpture-architecture” through commissions under the Per Cent for Art scheme, a budget dedicated to public architectural creation in France.
