Latifa Echakhch draws directly from personal memories to create her artworks. The objects she uses are steeped in history. She reshapes them in order to release their poetic and political dimension.
Suspended by strings just like puppets, these 19th-century Neapolitan figures are lying on the floor, undressed and dislocated. The artist has presented them in a theatrical manner, as if an unexpected and brutal event had just occurred. Once decorative, these silhouettes have now been removed from their original context and seem stuck in a new timeframe. This melancholic work invites us to reflect on history, memory and human nature.
