"A simple movement can create incredibly intense energy and reveal truly sculptural figures, with a certain lack of control."
ln his portraits, Amoako Boafo works the flesh with his fingers in order to "encode the different nuances of skin colour" and achieve an expressiveness and energy that contrasts with the monochrome background. This way of imprinting his body onto the canvas enables him to communicate with his subjects in the Black Diaspora series, as with this Viennese artistand theorist of black feminist and postcolonial studies. Boafo is influenced by the painters of the Secession movement, particularly here Gustav Klimt and his Lady with the Fan (1917-1918).
