La Chevauchée nocturne
[1959 / 1963]
"The extreme exaltation of my feelings and desires allowed me to work not according to the nature of forms, but on the contrary to the nature of my emotions...".
Winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1928, Jacques-Charles Zwobada produced numerous commissions. Marked by his passionate love for Antonia Fiermonte in the 1940s, his work devoted to the glorification of the female body gradually tended towards a more organic expression, and took on a tragic lyricism following the sudden death of his muse in 1956. The sculptor raised a mausoleum ta her in the cemetery at Mentana, near Rome, in which this monumental Chevauchée [Ride] evokes Orpheus in the Underworld in an impossible embrace, seeking his lost love.
