The struggle to secure the release of her son Murat from Guantánamo propels a stay-at-home mother of Turkish origin named Rabiye Kurnaz from her home in Bremen into world politics and as far as the Supreme Court in Washington. A lawyer specialising in human rights, Bernhard Docke, fights to secure Murat’s release by her side.
Inspired by the true story of Rabiye and Murat Kurnaz, this dramedy, with mass appeal, works thanks to an incredible performance by Meltem Kaptan.
“Serious political errors were committed at the time, and they have been proven. German policy was not only to do nothing to bring Murat Kurnaz back from Guantánamo to Germany, it was to proactively prevent it! There’s a huge difference. It’s a huge scandal. And there is proof. I think it’s truly shameful that up to now, nobody has apologised. It should have happened a long time ago.” Andreas Dresen, RFI, 14 February 2022
