Sudan, near the Merowe dam. Maher works in a traditional brickyard that is fed by the waters of the Nile.
Every evening he goes secretly into the desert to build a mysterious construction made of mud. With the Sudanese people rising up to demand their freedom, his creation seems to come to life…

Biography
Born in Beirut, Ali Cherri is a visual artist and director who lives in Paris. Combining film, video, sculpture and installations, his work questions the construction of historical narratives. Ali was recently artist in residence at the National Gallery in London (2021/2022) and was awarded the Silver Lion at the 59th Venice Art Biennale (2022). His short films L’Intranquille (The Disquiet) and Le Creuseur (The Digger) have been shown and won prizes in many festivals. Shot in Sudan during the revolution, Le Barrage (The Dam), his first feature film, was presented at the Cannes festival – Directors' Fortnight 2022.
