The event is over
Wendy, accompanied by her dog Lucy, set out on the road to Alaska in the hope of finding a modest job and starting a new life. When the car broke down in the town in Oregon, the precarious balance she was trying to maintain was threatened.
Kelly Reichardt, Wendy and Lucy, United States, 2009, DCP (origin: 16 mm adapted to 35 mm), 80 min, colour, in English with French subtitles
With Michelle Williams, Lucy, Will Oldham, Walter Dalton, Will Patton, Larry Fessenden
Official Selection at the Canne Festival 2008 – Un certain regard
The first collaboration with Michelle Williams, who embodies a Wendy who is as frail as she is tenacious, this road movie in a forced stop sees the mirage of the West fading with each day.
"The idea of Wendy and Lucy came after hurricane Katrina. We were hearing about these people who were trying to survive with whatever came to hand. Some people said they were on the breadline out of laziness. Jon and I wondered if they could survive without the help of the government. […] In the film, we don't know where she comes from, but that's the kind of situation we had in mind." Kelly Reichardt, interview with Gus Van Sant, BOMB Magazine, no105, 2008, reproduced in the book entitled Kelly Reichardt. L'Amérique retraversée (America reconsidered).
Presented by Emmanuel Burdeau, critic, followed by an encounter with Kelly Reichardt
