“We should perhaps start a correspondence, Maybe we will not correspond to one another. Ebrahim can send me a letter on Friday, and I’ll answer next Friday. So, see you Friday, Robinson!” Jean-Luc Godard thus started directing his thoughts, carefully desperate, and sent pictures and words from Switzerland across the English Channel. In his stately home in Sussex, Ebrahim Golestan strove to decipher the zany messages and sought artfully to tease reason out of them. And so on, until a veil fell over the two fleeing gods. Does the existence of poets even mean anything in these times of distress?
“See you Friday, Robinson is not just the fifth film by Iranian documentary maker Mitra Farahani (Fifi Howls from Happiness, in 2013), it also retains a certain aura acquired over time by its two actors: the first named Ebrahim Golestan, perhaps the greatest living Iranian writer, and filmmaker, exiled in Sussex since 1975, now aged 99 ; and Godard, Jean-Luc, residing in Rolle, aged 91, who fully represents the notion of film as power, thought and function since he rocked the world of film one afternoon in 1959 with Breathless – ever since, not a second that’s not spent deconstructing.” Philippe Azoury, Les Inrockuptibles, 11 February 2022
