American artist Zoe Beloff’s latest film The Tramp’s New World retraces the story of American novelist, screenwriter and film critic James Agee and his screenplay of the same name. James Agee wrote the screenplay in 1948 after being deeply affected by the trauma of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
How can the apocalypse be survived and how can the post-disaster world be envisaged? Agee intended Charlie Chaplin to play the main role of a person who witnesses the end of civilisation. The film was never made. Zoe Beloff offers a personal interpretation, combining documentary research with Brechtian staging.
