During the early Sixties in New York, the artist Claes Oldenburg upturned performance codes by staging a series of happenings, whose influence contributed to the revival of this artistic practice. The five films (which received awards at the 1963 Knokke-le-Zoute International festival of Experimental Film in Belgium), Nekropolis I; Pat’s Birthday; Scarface and Aphrodite; Voyage II and World Fair II, continued in a clear line from the artist's work on sculpture, and his analysis of an American society alienated by mass production and consumption. Filmed by Raymond Saroff, Vernon Zimmerman and Robert Breer, Claes Oldenburg's performances are all orchestrated situations designed to disrupt the relationship of individuals with objects, space and time by making play with interactions governed by chance and dreams.
