The United States may boast the benefits of its hegemony, but its opponents are less enthusiastic and are concerned about the extent of its all-powerfulness. Emmanuel Todd adopts another point of view and considerably tones down American omnipotence. For his part, he sees the progressive and reassuring emergence of a more peaceful and more democratic world in which the United States is no longer be in a position of force. US "theatrical militarism" should not be a long-term hurdle to such development.
