La Mort et le diable / Être tsigane

This session, in the presence of German film-maker Peter Nestler, presents two

milestones in an outstanding filmography, two films in which memory plays a key

role. La Mort et le Diable [Death and the Devil] revisits the photographs of

the ethnographer and traveller Eric von Rosen, in a dizzying combination of

emotion and tragedy. Être tsigane [Being a Gypsy] explores the representation

and word of a people with a tragic destiny. An immense feeling of dignity

emerges from this film, in particular through the ‘us’ of a community which is

constantly stigmatised and threatened.
