With music by Luca Francesconi and Heiner Müller's reinvented text of Choderlos de Laclos' Les Liaison dangereuses, the opera Quartett interpenetrates three worlds:the interior, a post-apocalyptic space where two solitary monsters – the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont – collide; the exterior, the two protagonists' thoughts and plots; and, outside, a space of metaphysical forces, the only space that can absorb the tension of Quartett.
