Sur la route du charbon, qui va des mines du Shanxi au grand port de Tianjin, en Chine du Nord, des chauffeurs au volant de camions de cent tonnes font la noria, de nuit comme de jour. Au bord de la route : prostituées, flics, rançonneurs à la petite semaine, garagistes, mécaniciens.

On the coal road linking the Shanxi mines with the large port of Tianjin, in northern China, the drivers of 100-ton trucks shuttle endlessly to and fro, day and night. On the roadside: prostitutes, cops, petty racketeers, garage owners, mechanics.

Un grand chantier de démolition à Chengdu, la capitale de la province du Sichuan, à l'ouest de la Chine. La relation entre le réalisateur, «l'homme de Harvard», et des travailleurs migrants qui lui ouvrent la porte de leurs baraquements, et le guident dans son travail.
