The rapid rise of mainstream books dates back to the creation of the "paperback", in the early Fifties. Its now familiar graphic manner gives a major place to original illustrations. Here, drawing on the example of the publisher Nouvelle Revue Française, we look back over the forms taken by pre-war mainstream publishing and assess it as an area for graphic exploration, then retrace the history of the graphic metamorphoses of paperback books after the war.
Talk by Alban Cerisier (publishing historian and general secretary of Gallimard).
