"BRB", Miri Segal
30 Mar 2008
The event is over
BRB, the acronym for « be right back » habitually used in chat rooms, is a journey through the virtual continent of Second Life. By filming her online avatar, Miri Segal constructs a narrative whose characters, plots and codes are specific to this realm, with its dematerialised geography and uninhibited morals. Blank screens replace silences and intimate scenes unfold in full view. In this 'game that is not really a game' the artist attempts to rise to the quintessentially cinematic challenge of an encounter with otherness.
A mathematics graduate of Jerusalem University and an arts graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute, for over a decade now Miri Segal has developed a reflection on images and how we perceive them, through a series of installations presented both in Europe and in the United States. Her most recent exhibitions Bon Voyage Love & Strife in 2006, at the Galerie Kamel Mennour in Paris, and Just a Second, Life, at the Dvir Gallery in Tel Aviv were both unanimously lauded. BRB is in the filmic continuation of this body of work. Miri Segal lives and works in Tel Aviv.
