A legendary figure of the New York underground during the Sixties, Barbara Rubin was warmly applauded at the Film-Makers’ Co-op of New York in 1963 after a period in a psychiatric institution. She made only one film: Christmas on Earth (1963): a defiant work and an orgiastic ritual, in which the self-destructive impulses of the artist, then aged 17, mingle with the libertarian aspirations of her times.
