"Jibaku" entry, excerpt: "Repeated failures led a number of pilots to envisage the Jibaku (a final dive used as a tactic) as the only way to regain lost efficiency and cause considerable damage to the enemy. Many arrived at this conclusion: 'There's nothing left to lose, so…' Despite the horrific aspect this deliberate gesture has for us, it has to be admitted that the practice had an exceptional "yield", because a single pilot in a single plane could achieve definite tactical results when whole squadrons were failing."
