Julie Cunningham (they/them) performed for fifteen years with Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Michael Clark Company and others, recognised for Outstanding Modern Performance by the Critics Circle National Dance Awards, 2014. They founded Julie Cunningham & Company (JCC) in 2017 to develop new movement vocabularies and address questions of gender identity.

Julie has successfully made 12 works to date which have been presented in the UK and internationally alongside engaging in choreographic research and extensive teaching. To Be Me, performed to poetry by Kae Tempest, featured in the 2017 British Council Showcase at Edinburgh Fringe. Julie subsequently created new work for the V&A Museum, the Southbank Centre, and the Barbican again in 2018 with an adaptation of Sarah Kane’s Crave, performed by four female-identifying dancers and actors. JCC made its main stage debut at Sadler’s Wells as a new wave associate in October 2018 with m/y, an all-womxn work commissioned as part of the theatre’s 20th anniversary celebration. In 2019 Julie was one of 10 artists commissioned for Art Night, London, presented work at Napoli Teatro Festival and with Haroon Mirza as part of Melbourne International Festival. Julie is a regular collaborator with Pauline Boudry/Renate Lorenz, most notably as part of installation "Moving Backwards".
