From 5 to 9 January 2022, the Centre Pompidou presents, for the first time in Europe, a complete retrospective of films and videos by American artist Richard Serra. Organised with the assistance of the Galerie Gagosian – currently showing Transmitter, a new monumental sculpture by Richard Serra, in its Le Bourget space – this retrospective accompanies the recent donation of films and videos by the artist to the museum.
Richard Serra encountered experimental film in New York in the latter half of the 1960s and was particularly marked by the programme of the Anthology Film Archives and its "Essential Cinema" cycle. In an interview with Annette Michelson published in the October review in 1979, the artist discussed some of the films that marked his own work and this programme sets out to elaborate on his comments by drawing on the Centre Pompidou's collections of films and videos.
Session in the presence of Marcella Lista, head curator of the Centre Pompidou's new media collection.
