In response to a commission by the Live Shows department of the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Centre Pompidou x West Bund Museum in Shanghai, Jérôme Bel collaborated with Xiao Ke, a 41 year-old dancer and choreographer from Yunan who is currently living in Shanghai.
"We started to work via tele-conference some weeks ago because, for ecological reasons, neither I nor my company take planes any longer. In a certain sense, that was just as well, because Xiao was in lock-down at home. Now the situation is reversed, she can go out but I can't. I sent her all the videos of my shows, asking her to tell me what interested her and suggesting that she use them however she wished. She made some choices from the body of my work and the result will be a solo performance recounting the evolution of dance and culture in China over the last forty years.
I was so interested in the result that I thought it was essential to make the trip and stage the show in France. We are thus working on another version of the show, which I present on stage, with Xiao Ke in video-conference from Shanghai. A very experimental show." Jérôme Bel, 15 April 2020
