“Todd Haynes came across this novel in the summer of 2008, just as the USA was sliding into the staggering sub-prime crisis. He decided to explore the effects of the Great Depression, filming and showing it in such a way as to echo the present. He also included many of the novel’s plot twists that had been left out of the film [by Michael Curtiz], such as the final period, which is crucial to the monstrous mother-daughter relationship playing out here. Adaptation on this scale required a mini-series format (over five hours), that Todd Haynes wrote with Jonathan Raymond.” Martine Delahaye, Le Monde, 22 June 2017
Kate Winslet received several awards for this role, including a Golden Globe.
