In a remote mountain village, the still fresh love of Anna and Marco is put to the test. A brain tumour causes Marco to gradually lose control of his impulses. Juggling a tense relationship with the village community and the effects of Marco’s illness, Anna tries to preserve their love.
Wielding both extreme care and tenderness, A Piece of Sky recalls another great Swiss film, Fredi M. Murer’s Soulmate (1985), and shines through as one of the great revelations of the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival.
“Michael Koch documents the daily life of farmers in the Swiss Alps, including cattle servicing and hard labour. Yet again, out of stark reality emerge surreal figures: Anna and Marco, who seem to hail straight from a fairy story of princesses and ogres. A mysterious choir sings the story, and Koch directs a stimulating dialogue between austerity, on the ground, and a spiritual dimension, somewhere up in the clouds.” Nicolas Bardot, lepolyester.com, 14 February 2022
